Soyinka, Achebe, others to attend Bruce Onobrakpeya art exhibition in Lagos

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka and several prominent traditional and political leaders are set to attend a landmark art exhibition in Lagos honouring the master printmaker Bruce Onobrakpeya.

The event, titled ‘The Gregorian Art Exhibition,’ will take place at Jubilee Hall, St. Gregory’s College in Ikoyi from April 25 – 27.

The exhibition is organised by the St. Gregory’s College Old Boys Association and curated by Mudiare Onobrakpeya. It features an intergenerational showcase under the theme “Celebrating Legacy, Excellence and Continuity,” highlighting Onobrakpeya’s role as a pioneer of Nigeria’s modern art movement.

Distinguished guests expected at the event include the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel, and the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II.

Other confirmed traditional rulers include the Onigeruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, Oba Semiudeen Orimadegun Kasali (Emugoriade 1), the Onilado of Ilado and Inagbe, Oba Mobadenle Oyekan and the Oloto of Otto, Oba Bashir Abisoye Odesanya.

The grand opening is scheduled for 11:30am on April 25 and is strictly by invitation for VIP viewing. The general public will be granted access from 2pm on the opening day. Following the launch, the gallery will remain open to the public on April 26 and 27 from 11am daily.

Bruce Onobrakpeya is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential contemporary artists. A founding member of the Zaria Rebels, his career spans over six decades, earning him the prestigious title of UNESCO Living Human Treasure for his contributions to global cultural heritage.
