#RoundAboutTown With Henri Yire

We picked him up at Elevation Church Lekki, he had been waiting for a few hours.
He said he came into town a bit early; at about 7 am.

He introduced himself as Kevin Heart and waited for the comments and questions.

Yes that was his real name.

No, he wasn’t related to the famous comic.

Yes, it was his biological name given to him by loving parents.

He smiled.

He had a faded backpack stocked with food and a smile that never left his face.

He was quiet, a disposition that signalled the makings of a loner.
He didn’t seem like the typical Marathon runner though, no bursts of passion in-between sentences, just a placid expression and a competitive edge about him.

“I am here to win, not just run.”

Marathons in Lekki are not usually a stern affair. It’s rather a gang of hashtag-driven, social collective where videos are made mid-run and sporting gears are put on full display.

The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will feature scores of them today.

But a few will be like Kevin Heart, bent on taking home the brand new car promised to the winner of the 10k run.

If you fit into any of the category; fun runner or fierce competitor, you should come out today for the run.

But if you can’t, here are other fun things that you get to this weekend.

Join us this Saturday for the screening of ‘Bamako’. A 2006 political drama by Abderrahmane Sissako. The film depicts a trial taking place in Bamako, the capital of Mali, amidst daily life in the city. It touches on European colonization and how it plays a role in shaping African societies and their resulting poverty and difficulties. This would be followed shortly after by an open conversation on the African and African American experiences. We would discuss how these two groups affected by slavery, colonialism, and exploitation can grow to better understand each other. And the means of reeducating people to have a better understanding of the African diaspora, to dispel myths and negative stereotypes.
