Quramo Writers Prize 2024 longlists 20 emerging authors

The Quramo Writers Prize (QWP) 2024 has unveiled its longlist of 20 promising manuscripts, marking another milestone in its mission to discover and nurture new African literary talents.

Established in 2017, the QWP is a prestigious award offering a N1 million cash prize and a publishing contract, aiming to kickstart the careers of unpublished African writers.

According to a statement by the organisers, this year’s longlisted authors include a diverse mix of voices from across the continent each bringing their unique perspectives and stories to the competition. The longlist represents the initial selection from submissions of 30,000-word fiction manuscripts, a process that began earlier this year.

Those on the longlist are:

Adeseri Emmanuella, Martin Chukwumah, Kabir Sabe Jibia, Salome Abiodun Medemaku, Arthur Gabriel Yak, Chukwumah Jonathan Jonathan, Amaka Azie, Sandra Uche Delumozie, Bisola Akintomide, Oyeleye Esther Eniola, Chidi Nwakpa and Henry Chukwuemeka Onyema. Others are Lawal Ayuba Adewale, Ifeanyi Kalu, Ornguze Nashima Nathaniel, Immaculate Halla, Adikaibe Caleb Chidera, Vandefan Aondogu Fidelis, Joseph Olamide Babalola and Deryus Kwabena Partey.

A distinguished three-man jury, consisting of industry veterans like Dr. Eghosa Imasuen, Mrs. Lechi Eke, and Mr. Anote Ajeluorou, is tasked with narrowing this list down to a shortlist of five, which will be revealed in September. The final winner will be announced during the Quramo Festival (QFest) 2024, scheduled to take place from October 2nd to 6th at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. The theme for this year’s festival is “The Shifting: Empowering Voices… Inspiring Minds,” promising a celebration of literary excellence and innovation.

Last year, Chiziterem Chijoke took home the prize with her compelling manuscript, ‘Dear Zini’, setting high expectations for this year’s finalists.

The book is due to be published next month, and Chijoke will be available to sign copies at Qfest 2024.
