Onyeka Onwenu has died at the age of 72. The iconic performer reportedly collapsed Tuesday night after a performance at a private birthday celebration in Lagos’ exclusive Banana Island.
The legendary Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress was entertaining guests at the birthday party of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, when she suddenly fell ill. She was rushed to a hospital in Victoria Island but was later pronounced dead. As of now, her family has not officially confirmed the news of her passing.
Known as the “Elegant Stallion” of Nigerian music, Onwenu’s career spanned over four decades. She burst onto the music scene in the 1980s with her debut album For the Love of You and went on to release numerous hit songs, including the beloved “One Love.” Her contributions to Nigerian music and culture earned her the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
Beyond her artistic achievements, Onwenu was also a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and women’s rights. She served as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.
Born in Obosi, Anambra State in 1952, Onwenu’s influence extended far beyond music. She acted in several Nollywood films and was recognized as one of Nigeria’s most influential women. Her passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian entertainment and leaves a void in the country’s cultural landscape.
