Jennifer Finch, the long-standing bassist for the American grunge band L7, has died at the age of 59 following a prolonged battle with brain cancer, per loudwire.com.
The band confirmed her death on July 19, stating that Finch passed away surrounded by the support of friends, family, and global peers.
Finch joined L7 in 1987, alongside founding members Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner. The trio formed the core of the Los Angeles-based group, performing on seven studio albums. Finch contributed to the band’s 1988 self-titled debut before L7 achieved mainstream commercial success with their 1992 breakthrough album, Bricks Are Heavy, which featured the hit single “Pretend We’re Dead”. She also performed on the 1994 follow-up record, Hungry for Stink.
Though Finch departed the group in 1996, she rejoined L7 for their 2014 reunion. She remained an active touring member until recently, when she stepped down from live performances to undergo treatment for her cancer diagnosis.
Prior to her withdrawal from touring, Finch insisted that the band proceed with their scheduled live dates. Bandmate Donita Sparks previously stated that the group was focused on protecting Finch’s privacy and dignity while raising resources for her medical care.
In a public statement, L7 praised Finch’s fierce spirit, humour, and boundless creativity, noting that her impact on music and art remained immeasurable.
As pioneers of the 1990s grunge and punk movements, L7 broke barriers for women in alternative rock. Finch’s aggressive basslines and commanding stage presence helped define the era’s subculture, cementing the band’s legacy as influential figures in heavy rock music.
