The blue-skinned Guardians of the Universe have made their official live-action debut in the DC Universe, appearing in the third episode of the HBO Max series Lanterns, per inverse.com.
The latest episode, titled “OutKast,” provides the first substantial look at the enigmatic overseers of the Green Lantern Corps.
The installment features Laura Linney as a Guardian named Lianna, who visits the parents of John Stewart to reveal his destiny as a future Green Lantern. While the series keeps their true form largely under wraps, their introduction brings the complex history of the cosmic watchdogs into the live-action franchise.
Originating in comic books from 1960, the Guardians are Malthusians from the planet Maltus who established their base on Oa to maintain intergalactic peace. Despite their altruistic mission, their history is marked by catastrophic missteps, including the creation of the rogue android Manhunters and disastrous experiments with the emotional spectrum. These narrative threads from the source material establish the cinematic overseers as morally ambiguous figures rather than infallible leaders.
The HBO Max series Lanterns continues to expand the narrative landscape of the newly rebooted DC Universe, with new episodes releasing on Sundays.
