Genti Media, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute and sponsored by MTN, is set to launch its much-anticipated audiovisual exhibition titled “Of Tongues & Voices: An Audiovisual Exhibition on Nigerian Languages.”
This groundbreaking exhibition, slated to open its doors on Thursday, February 15th, at 6 pm, according to a statement, will be hosted at the prestigious Goethe Institute Nigeria, located at 7 Anifowoshe Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
“Of Tongues & Voices” promises to be a captivating journey into the rich tapestry of Nigerian languages, showcasing the beauty and complexity of tongues often overlooked in mainstream discourse, the statement further explained. By spotlighting languages beyond the widely recognised ‘Wazobia’ trio of Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba, Genti Media aims to provide a platform for lesser-known languages such as Birom, Ezza, Nupe and Pidgin, among others.
The exhibition will feature an array of interactive audio and visual displays, offering visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the diverse linguistic landscape of Nigeria. Additionally, artist Emalohi Iruobe will unveil her thought-provoking installation, “Reclaiming Our Names,” adding a layer of depth to the exploration of cultural identity and heritage.
“We are thrilled to partner with Genti Media and MTN to bring this innovative exhibition to the public,” said a representative from the Goethe Institute. “At the heart of our mission is the promotion of cultural exchange and understanding, and ‘Of Tongues & Voices’ aligns perfectly with these objectives by celebrating the linguistic richness of Nigeria.”
In addition to the opening night festivities, the exhibition will run until the end of March 2024, welcoming visitors on weekdays from 9 am to 3 pm. Attendees can also look forward to a series of workshops focused on local languages, details of which will be announced via Genti Media’s Instagram and website.
