BoConcept, Nomadic Art Gallery unite for “Art meets Design” exhibition in Abuja

BoConcept, the renowned international furniture company, has teamed up with Nomadic Art Gallery to present the captivating exhibition titled “Art meets Design.”

Running from September 16th to October 7th, 2023, this unique event promises to be a fusion of contemporary art and modern design, captivating visitors at 37a Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2, FCT Abuja, from Monday through Saturday.

“Art meets Design” will showcase the creative prowess of notable Nigerian artists, including Oluwaferanmi Okeowo, Joe Abdallah, Anny Robert and Jessicah Yakno-Abasi Ene, who will display their extraordinary works in this captivating exhibition.

The brainchild behind the “Art meets Design” concept is none other than Charlotte Obidairo of BoConcept. It all began in 2014 when BoConcept, a Danish furniture company, ventured into the Nigerian market, and customers raised questions about integrating contemporary furniture with African art in their homes. Obidairo’s visionary idea was to provide a platform for bridging this gap through month-long exhibitions featuring local artists.

“Some customers were expressing concerns about how contemporary furniture might work with African art in their homes. They were having difficulties in visualizing the mixing of the genres. I decided to provide the forum for addressing exactly that during month-long exhibitions with local artists dubbed ‘Art meets Design’,” explains Charlotte Obidairo.

This concept has since become a resounding success, expanding to BoConcept stores across Africa.

In a harmonious collaboration with Nomadic Art Gallery, a Lagos-based institution representing contemporary African artists, this exhibition seeks to marry the worlds of art and design seamlessly. Mercy Imiegha, Gallery Director of Nomadic Art Gallery, expressed her excitement about this venture, stating, “Art and design go hand in hand. Both good design and good art are about making an impression and getting a reaction. That is what we are hoping to achieve with the Art meets Design Abuja edition.”

Visitors to the exhibition will be treated to art displayed in settings simulating a home environment. The carefully curated pieces will enhance the beauty and functionality of modern urban furniture while vice versa. Every item on display, whether furniture or art, will be available for purchase.

Nomadic Art Gallery, on a mission since 2016 to give African art and artists a strong voice and visibility, has pioneered the “Afrobeat of Contemporary Art.” Their collaboration with BoConcept Africa over the years has successfully showcased African art alongside Scandinavian designs, highlighting the complementary nature of these two distinct aesthetics. “Art meets Design” exhibitions have graced cities like Cape Town, Johannesburg, Lagos and Nairobi.
