Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel prize in literature by the Swedish Academy for her bold and inventive oeuvre bridging classical traditions and contemporary forms, per theguardian.com.
Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson is renowned for genre-crossing works that blend poetry, prose, and translation, heavily drawing upon ancient Greek literature and mythology.
Her career spans influential publications including her 1986 debut Eros the Bittersweet and her 1998 verse novel Autobiography of Red.
In 2001, she became the first woman to win the TS Eliot prize for The Beauty of the Husband, alongside receiving Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships. Her diverse bibliography also features Men in the Off Hours, Decreation, and Nox. Carson will formally receive her medal and diploma at a ceremony in Stockholm in December.
The Nobel prize in Literature has been awarded 119 times since 1901, with recent laureates including Annie Ernaux, Abdulrazak Gurnah, and László Krasznahorkai.
