D’Angelo’s brother confirms posthumous solo album is in the works

A posthumous D’Angelo album is being prepared, with six tracks completed so far, according to his brother, Luther Archer, per hiphophero.com.

Archer made the disclosure in an interview with Kiss Richmond on the first anniversary of the singer’s death. D’Angelo, from Virginia, died last year at 51 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

“We’ve got an album coming out,” Archer said. “Just him. So no collaborations.” He added that a “whole vault” of unreleased music exists, and that the family is still deciding what to include.

Archer said further projects are being considered, including an album of B-sides and a collection of cover songs, reflecting the singer’s fondness for covers. He also mentioned one project involving Mary J. Blige and Michael Jackson, without giving details.

Questlove first suggested last year that a posthumous record was in development. “When it comes out, you’ll know,” he said.

Before D’Angelo’s death, Raphael Saadiq said the singer was working on six pieces of new music. Saadiq described a track recorded with Q-Tip, with himself on bass and both musicians on backing vocals, as likely to feature on the album.
