Chima Olugbenga Enwenzor joins inaugural ArtAfrikanity Art Festival headliners

The inaugural ARTFrikanity Art Festival, set to transform Lagos into a dynamic hub of African creativity from December 1–28, 2025, has announced renowned contemporary artist Chima Olugbenga Enwezor as one of its headline artists.

Enwezor’s highly anticipated solo exhibition will serve as a major highlight of the festival, which features over 100 visionary artists and creators across Africa and the diaspora. His participation underscores ARTFrikanity’s commitment to spotlighting African talent with powerful global influence.

The ARTFrikanity concept was conceived by Mr. Dapo Mudashiru, founder of O.M. Gallery, Victoria Island. Mudashiru describes the festival as a cultural movement designed to immerse audiences in Africa’s expansive narrative—its ancestral memory, feminine strength, spiritual depth, and intimate relationship with nature.

The festival’s inaugural theme, “It’s All About You,” is a tribute to personal and collective African experiences worldwide. Enwezor’s work, known for its emotional depth and attention to human identity, aligns strongly with this ethos, making his exhibition a compelling anchor among the festival’s headline showcases.

Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1962 and currently based in Lagos, Nigeria, Enwezor is widely celebrated for his expressionistic and figurative abstract style.

He studied at Howard University College of Fine Arts & Design in Washington, D.C., initially pursuing architecture before transitioning to fine arts and earning his BFA in 1991. Known for his dynamic surfaces and rotational compositions, Enwezor’s pieces invite viewers to engage with multiple perspectives simultaneously.

His artistic influences include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Willem de Kooning, Alberto Giacometti, and Susanne Wenger. His works have been exhibited in major cities including London, Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.
