Joburg Film Festival set to celebrate global storytelling

In the heart of Johannesburg, a city historically defined by golden dreams and interconnected narratives, the seventh Joburg Film Festival (JFF) is poised to transform cinema into a powerful medium of human connection.

Scheduled for March 11-16, 2025, according to an APO Group statement, the festival has boldly proclaimed “The Golden Thread – Connected Through Stories” as its guiding theme, promising audiences a transformative journey through diverse global perspectives.

“Stories are our most precious treasures,” says JFF Founder Tim Mangwedi. “They are the invisible threads that weave humanity together, transcending geographical boundaries and cultural differences.”

This year’s lineup is a testament to that philosophy, featuring over 60 films that span continents and experiences. From Sebata, a gripping South African detective thriller, to Rauol Peck’s poignant documentary about Ernest Cole—the first black freelance photographer during apartheid—each selection promises to illuminate complex human experiences.

Standout international productions like To a Land Unknown, directed by Lebanese filmmaker Mahdi Fleifel, and Under the Volcano, which explores a Ukrainian’s experience during Russia’s invasion, underscore the festival’s commitment to global storytelling.

The festival isn’t merely a passive viewing experience. Through its comprehensive JBX (Joburg Xchange) programme, it actively nurtures emerging talent. The JBX Youth initiative, targeting filmmakers aged 18-35, offers workshops, mentorship and a Young Voices Competition that this year celebrates “The Power of Sports in Film.”

MultiChoice CEO Nomsa Philiso emphasises the festival’s deeper mission: “We’re not just showcasing films; we’re spotlighting the richness of African storytelling and its power to connect, inspire, and transform.”

With early registratio now open and festival badges going on sale December 3rd, the Joburg Film Festival invites global audiences to join a cinematic celebration that promises to be more than entertainment—it’s a bridge between worlds, a golden thread connecting us all.
