The vibrant city of Lagos is set to host an extraordinary cultural exchange as Rootz Vybez 1.0, a project promoting Jamaican music and culture, arrives in Nigeria.
Rootz Vybez 1.0, spearheaded by Yaad Music Ent and Mining Gold Studio, will see a delegation of Jamaican artistes, producers and industry professionals engaging with their Nigerian counterparts. The event is hosted by the Lagos-based Culture Advocates Caucus (CAC).
Jacqueline Nelson, CEO of Yaad Music Ent and founder of Rootz Vybez, expressed her excitement: “I’m thrilled to see Rootz Vybez come to life. This initiative is about more than just music – it’s about cultural exchange, collaboration, and growth. We’re excited to share our Jamaican culture with Nigeria and learn from their rich cultural heritage as well.”
Nelson envisioned Rootz Vybez as a platform for artistes and industry professionals to connect, learn, and grow together. The visit includes a variety of activities, such as “A Day of Reggae,” added to the week-long Felabration festival scheduled from October 13-23, celebrating the legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, a musical icon and freedom fighter in Nigeria.
Other activities include a musical workshop at Tenstrings School of the Arts, a visit to the Performing Musician Association of Nigeria (PMAN), and tours of historical sites.
Participants will have the opportunity to connect with Nigerian artistes, producers and industry professionals, gaining insights into the local music industry.
“We’re looking forward to a fruitful and enriching experience,” says Nelson. “We believe that music has the power to bring people together and transcend borders. Rootz Vybez is just the beginning of what we hope will be a long and fruitful partnership between Jamaica and Nigeria.”
The itinerary for the Rootz Vybez troupe includes:
– Performances at Freedom Park and The New African Shrine
– Workshop at Tenstrings Music Institute
– Tour of Fela Kuti’s home and Kalakuta Museum
The tour is organised in collaboration with Yaad Music Ent Limited, Mining Gold Studio, and Cultural Advocate Caucus, with support from Cau Nigeria Ruge Entertainment, Brownhill Radio, Freedom Park Lagos, and The New Afrikan Shrine. Additional support comes from Lasco Foods, Ruge Entertainment, and Fam House Music.
