BET UK, a subsidiary of Paramount Global, has announced the release of Living Lyrics, an exclusive four-part documentary series that delves into the stories behind some of the UK’s most iconic music. Premiered on Friday, June 14th, on My5, the series producers say it promises an intimate look at the artistry and personal journeys of Britain’s leading musical talents.
Commissioned by BET UK and produced by BBC Studios Digital Originals, Living Lyrics is hosted by BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Kenny Allstar. The series blends documentary storytelling with live performances, focusing on one artist per episode. Featured talents include award-winning rapper and songwriter Headie One from North London, grime legend Ghetts, South London rapper and singer-songwriter Enny, and chart-topping Birmingham-based rapper Mist.
Each episode will see Kenny Allstar accompany the artists on a tour of their inspirations, incorporating a mix of on-the-ground and exclusive archive footage. The series will offer a rare glimpse into the lives of these artists, highlighting the places, people, and culture that have shaped their most legendary lyrics. Audiences can expect to see two exclusive performances in each episode: one in the studio and one acoustic set in a location significant to the artist.
Living Lyrics aims to go beyond the music, providing deep insights into the personal stories and experiences that fuel these artists’ creativity. Viewers will witness Ghetts dissect his politically charged track “Double Standards,” featuring Sampha, and Enny reveal the background behind her self-empowerment anthem “Peng Black Girls.” Each episode peels back the layers, exposing the raw truths and heartfelt emotions embedded in their lyrics.
The series is executive produced by Fatima Sesay and James Corbin of BBC Studios Digital Originals, promising a production that matches the calibre of its featured artists. Living Lyrics is set to captivate music lovers and anyone interested in the profound connections between life and art.
Tune into My5 to experience the stories and performances that make Living Lyrics a must-watch event.
