The Committee for Relevant Art (CORA) is set to inaugurate its much-anticipated CORA Library & Resource Centre at Freedom Park, Lagos Island.
The event, scheduled for Sunday, January 14, 2024, at 4 pm, marks the beginning of CORA’s 2024 culture season. The CORA Library & Resource Centre, nestled within the artistic haven of CORAVille at Freedom Park, will cater to the public, with a special focus on students and youths, according to a statement.
Renowned playwright and Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, will grace the occasion as the special guest of honour.
Positioned as a beacon for education, enlightenment and empowerment, the library aims to contribute to nation-building and human capital development. It will host various literary activities, including the flagship CORA BOOKTrek and literacy campaigns, fostering direct interactions between authors and readers.
The Library & Resource Centre plans to conduct regular workshops and seminars on writing, reading, speechmaking and other literacy-enhancing engagements. Furthermore, it will serve as a hub for artist organisations dedicated to deepening literacy in the national consciousness.
The project has garnered support from organisations such as Freedom Park, Chief Kayode Aderinokun (Chair CORA Trustee), CORA Board members, subscribers, volunteers and the Hawthornden Foundation. Notably, the initiative thrives on donations from authors, publishers, bookstores and the public at large.
