In a pivotal moment that concluded a highly charged trial, rapper Tory Lanez was handed a 10-year prison sentence by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford for the shooting and wounding of hip-hop sensation Megan Thee Stallion. The 31-year-old Lanez was convicted last December on three felony counts: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The trial sparked significant debate within the hip-hop community and beyond, sparking conversations about various issues including the reluctance of Black victims to engage with law enforcement, gender dynamics in hip-hop, the toxic online environment, the protection of Black women, and the concept of misogynoir – a specific form of misogyny aimed at Black women.
Judge Herriford’s verdict was preceded by an acknowledgment of Lanez’s seemingly contradictory traits, described as both a kind, charitable person and a devoted father, and the individual who pulled the trigger on Megan Thee Stallion. Herriford expressed, “Sometimes good people do bad things,” highlighting the consequences of actions and the lack of winners in such cases.
Megan Thee Stallion recounted the traumatic incident, testifying that Lanez fired a gun at her feet and demanded that she dance as she walked away from a vehicle they were in after leaving a party. The gunshot left her with bullet fragments and necessitated surgery, leading to an enduring emotional and physical struggle. Megan stated in a poignant statement read by a prosecutor, “Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace.”
In a plea for clemency, Lanez expressed remorse, wishing he could change the course of events that night and highlighting his ongoing care for Megan, who he referred to as his friend. His defence team, led by Jose Baez, conveyed disappointment in the sentence, framing it as an example of celebrity status impacting legal outcomes.
Megan’s courage in testifying and enduring online abuse was praised by prosecutors, with Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón emphasising her bravery as a source of inspiration for others.
While Lanez’s music career had seen a steady rise before the incident, Megan Thee Stallion’s prominence continued to soar, with Grammy wins and chart-topping singles elevating her status.
Lanez’s family and supporters packed the courtroom, with his defence asserting that Megan’s testimony about his parole-related warnings was untruthful and that DNA evidence presented was insufficient. Despite a plea for a new trial, Herriford denied the motion, leaving Lanez’s defence with plans to appeal.
