LABAF2019 -EXHIBITION OPENING @Museum Building.
What does Nigeria and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe have in common? Apparently, so much. For instance, they are both in the same age grade with Nigeria 59 years old, while the book is 60.
But there is more, and LABAF will focus on that in the exhibition titled, AND THE CENTRE REFUSES TO HOLD: Homage to Things Fall Apart @ 60.
The exhibition with an eclectic collection of drawings, paintings in various media and technique, sculptures, installations and mixed media, will dwell on post-colonialism in Africa, with Things Fall Apart as the centralising spin-off.
It is curated by Krydz Ikwuemesi for the Pan Africa Press & Sankofa Centre for Art and Heritage.

LUPITA ADDRESSES COLORISM
Lupita Nyong’o today addressed the concept of colorism and living with the self awareness and acceptance in a 6-part thread on twitter.
The Award- winning actress for the epic movie, ’12 years a slave’, went on twitter to unveil the motive behind her new children’s book, ‘Sulwe.’
After posting a picture of herself at 5-year old, she tweeted,
“I reflected on this little girl’s feelings and fantasies when I decided to write my children’s book, #Sulwe. With this book, I wanted to hold up a mirror for her.”
“As a little girl reading, I had all of these windows into the lives of people who looked nothing like me, and I had the chance to look into their worlds, but I didn’t have any mirrors” she continued.
The twitter thread continues with Lupita acknowledging the importance of ‘windows’ as a tool to develop empathy and an understanding of the wider world, but affirmed that mirrors help us develop our sense of self, and our understanding of our own world.
“They ground us in our body and our experiences’, she finished.
Her book Sulwe which drops on October 15, is a powerful, moving picture book about colorism, self-esteem, and learning that true beauty comes from within.

Lupita Nyong’o To Join All-Women African Army In New Documentary
Academy award winner Lupita Nyong’o is set to feature in a documentary on real-life unsung stories of African women warriors.
The project—titled ‘Warrior Women with Lupita Nyong’o’—will be featured on Channel 4, in the UK broadcast network.
The documentary is set to uncover the history behind a group called Agoji; an army of 4,000 women who battled against Europeans and Africans in the Kingdom of Dahomey between the 17th and 19th centuries. Nyong’o will journey through Benin to explore the army’s legacy.
The combination of Lupita Nyong’o s passion for telling black stories and the unique theme of the documentary is sure to ignite worldwide interest in the upcoming documentary.
The Agojie women, according to historical data, were recruited by their kings across three centuries and fought in huge numbers in highly-trained battalions,” said Bettany Hughes who serves as Creative Director at SandStone Global; the company producing the documentary.
“Women have frequently been written out of history, and powerful women fetishized – this is a case in point.
Lupita Nyong’o will ask searing questions about power play in history and who tells whose story.”
The Agoji army served as inspiration for the all-women army in Black Panther.
Rome Film Fest to honour Viola Davis with Lifetime Achievement Award.
The prestigious Rome Film Fest is set to honor Oscar, Emmy, and Tony-winning actress Viola Davis with its second lifetime achievement award this year.
Davis will also participate in one of the event’s “Close Encounter” talks, discussing her work with festival head Antonio Monda.
“Viola Davis is an extraordinary actress, who has transformed sincerity and dignity into sublime thespian art,” Monda said Tuesday in a statement. “It is a great honor for me, and for the Rome Film Fest, to celebrate her formidable talent and deep humanity.”
Davis is a three-time Oscar nominee, taking home the prize for best supporting actress in 2017 for Fences. She also has won Tony Awards for her work in ‘Fences’ and ‘King Hedley II’, and won the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in 2015 for her role as Annalise Keating on ‘How to Get Away With Murder.’
Davis will next appear as “Queen of the Blues” Ma Rainey in the screen adaptation of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel.
The 14th Rome Film Fest is set to run Oct. 17-27. The full lineup will be announced Friday.
