Wizkid has made history in the UK, selling out Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a 62,850-capacity venue, one of the country’s largest.
The feat came just one month after Burna Boy sold out London Olympic Stadium, an 80,000-capacity venue, in June 2023, the first African artiste to do so.
Wizkid shutdown Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London at the weekend, while performing at his More Love, Less Ego concert. His scintillating performance has earned him a place as the first African artiste to sell out Tottenham Stadium.
The success of Wizkid and Burna Boy’s concerts is a testament to the growing popularity of Afrobeats music around the world. Afrobeats is a genre of music that originated in Nigeria and combines elements of West African music with Caribbean and American influences.
It is also a sign of the growing economic power of the African continent and a growing demand for African music and culture around the world.
This significant milestone shows that African music is now a global force that can sell out some of the biggest venues in the world. This is a major step forward for the African music industry and is a sign of even greater things to come.
In addition to selling out stadiums, Wizkid and Burna Boy have also achieved significant commercial success with their albums. Made in Lagos for instance, was one of the highest-charting albums by an African artiste in 2020. Burna Boy’s Love, Damini has continued to make waves around the world.
On top of that, the two Nigerian stars made history by winning their first-ever Grammy Awards at the 2021 ceremony. Burna Boy won the Best Global Music Album category for his album Twice As Tall, which features a wide range of international artistes such as Stormzy, Youssou Ndour, Naughty By Nature and Chris Martin of Coldplay. Wizkid won the Best Music Video award for his song with Beyoncé, “Brown Skin Girl,” from the Lion King: The Gift album. Burna Boy was a nominee for a second consecutive year at the 63rd Grammy Awards.
Wizkid was also nominated for Best Global Music Album for his album Made in Lagos Deluxe Edition at the 2022 Grammy Awards
