Waterstones has unveiled the six authors shortlisted for its prestigious fourth annual Debut Fiction Prize, celebrating “astonishingly impressive and inspiring new voices” in the literary world, per theguardian.com. The diverse list includes Catherine Airey, William Rayfet Hunter, Lucy Steeds, Gurnaik Johal, Niamh Ní Mhaoileoin, and Lisa Ridzén.
Bea Carvalho, head of books at Waterstones, praised the selection for showcasing a “bright and promising future for fiction.” The shortlisted novels explore a range of compelling themes, from multigenerational family sagas to hedonistic summer holidays reminiscent of Saltburn-style dramas, and a Swedish bestseller.
Among the notable entries is William Rayfet Hunter’s Sunstruck, described as a “lively beach read” blending emotional sincerity with intriguing plotlines, perfect for fans of a “Saltburn-style television drama.” Lucy Steeds’s The Artist offers a “seductive combination of romance, puzzle and poetry,” set against the sensory backdrop of Provence.
This year’s shortlist also marks a significant first: Lisa Ridzén’s When the Cranes Fly South, a Swedish bestseller, is the first translated novel to be recognized by the prize. Inspired by her grandfather’s care notes, Ridzén’s work brings a unique international perspective to the list.
Over 600 Waterstones booksellers were involved in the initial selection process, with a panel of booksellers set to choose the ultimate winner. The victor, to be announced on July 24th, will receive £5,000 and ongoing support for their burgeoning writing career.
