Transcendence, an exhibition featuring works by the artists, Jimmy Nwanne and Olufemi Oyewole, opened on Friday, May 26, and runs through June 26, 2023 at Omenka Gallery, 24 Ikoyi Crescent, Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria.
Jimmy Nwanne’s works examine the relationship between life, identity, and migration. The freedom to make a composition, a portraiture, by rearranging the natural place of something into another, in order to communicate an idea. The different subjects and objects function as symbols or motifs that represent an idea used to make associations to different aspects of life; the interplay between them almost suggests the feeling of overlap or cut and paste.
Olufemi Oyewole’s works focus on the exploration of human expressions and how fundamental changes in culture can affect our perception of identity. Just as Nwanne views himself as a conscious vessel through which creativity finds expression, Oyewole sees himself as a social communicator charged with the responsibility of conveying ideas centred on the core of existence.
