UNITY UNVEILS TRAINING PROGRAM FOR AFRICA AT AFRIFF 2019

Afriff2019 film festival closed yesterday but not without making two big announcements, the launch of Nvivo TV and an international collaboration with game-engine development giants, Unity, to train animators and game developers in Nigeria.

Unity, the universal cross-platform game engine developers has partnered with African digital streaming platform Nvivo as authorized training partners for Africans in animation, gaming and VR experiences.

The announcement was made yesterday at the Afriff2019 masterclass by representatives of unity Tomas Karlsson and Tamim Alsaleh.

The opportunities in training and certification

Unity, one of the most widely used development platform in the world with over 3 billion devices reached worldwide and currently positioned as number 7 in the top ten emerging positions on linkedin.

The training which was verified by a visual of the official training partnership certificate from Unity to Nvivo, has been designed with authorised training partners and certified instructors.

Successfully trained stakeholders will receive Unity certifications after a number of exams as verified end-users of the platform to benchmark their user skills and the credential received can be used in the labour market.

Unity is working closely with network partners from Educational institutions and game industry developers to help create an overall training experience that will be relevant and applicable in specific industries.

The levels of certification includes Certified Associate, Certified 3D artist and Certified Professionals, all received after participating in their various training programs.

“We will kickstart the awareness by designing training workshops in Nigeria that cover a diverse range of experiences and different industries,” said Tom Karlsson, head of programmes at Unity.

When asked what the cost of obtaining a license would be, the Unity representative said that in the African region it will be a little less than 500 dollars.

HER

“HER” is an educative film of thirty (30) minutes inspired by the true story of a young teenage girl met at a local eatery. The young girl was on her period, but unfortunately, could not afford to purchase a sanitary towel, hence her exposure to unhygienic conditions. Upon further enquiries, we found that this was not an isolated incident as girls in a lot of communities cannot afford proper hygienic materials whenever they were on their period. The film explored different themes including period poverty (the inability to afford sanitary materials), rape, child labour, child marriage, child molestation, and institutionalized corruption in Nigeria’s armed forces. HER was made to create awareness and to highlight the current issues relating to the girl child. Our aim at the conversation cafe is to engender community development by showing the resulting effect of these ills, and more importantly, encourage an inclusive attitude that proffers working solutions that can be implemented to solving them. The impact of HER is a far-reaching as we have screened in several corporate organizations, schools and notable gathering in Nigeria and also globally. We will be hosting an intimate screening of HER in November. Abantu Book Festival Announces 2019 Line-up of Speakers

Zakes Mda, Basetsana Kumalo, Mona Eltahawy, Chris Abani and more will feature at the country’s biggest book festival for Black readers and writers.

Abantu Book Festival, South Africa’s biggest book festival for Black readers and writers, is back for this year’s installment of the cultural event. They’ve recently announced their exciting line-up of guest speakers and South Africans are here for it. Frankly, so are we.

Despite backlash in the past, the Abantu Book Festival has remained committed to providing a space where Black people (and Black people alone) can engage with both readers and writers about important literary works.

Veteran South African author Bra Zakes Mda, media mogul and recent author of a memoir entitled Bassie: My Journey of Hope Basetsana Kumalo as well as Egyptian-American journalist Mona Eltahawy and Nigerian-American author Chris Abani are part of the official line-up for the three-day event.

Joining them, will be Professor Pumla Gqola or “Feminist Rogue” as she’s known on social media. Professor Gqola has written several books including Rape: A South African Nightmare and Reflecting Rogue: Inside the Mind of a Feminist. Let’s not forget Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng or “Dr T” as she’s affectionately referred to, the fierce reproductive health rights activist and author of A Guide to Sexual Health & Pleasure which has taken South Africa by storm. Travel enthusiast Lerato Mogoatlhe and Keletso Mopai, who just released her debut collection of short stories entitled If You Keep Digging, will also be hitting the stage.

The Abantu Book Festival will take place from the 5th to the 8th of December at the Eyethu Lifestyle Center in Soweto and entry is R20.
