Ryan Gosling, known as the cinematic Ken to Margot Robbie’s Barbie, unwrapped the “I’m Just Ken” EP on Wednesday, a musical treat accompanied by collaborators Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
The EP boasts the Grammy-nominated ’80s-style power ballad, “I’m Just Ken,” from their film collaboration, and includes three diverse remixes. Among them is the yuletide edition, “I’m Just Ken (Merry Kristmas Barbie),” which comes complete with an official music video capturing the trio’s holiday studio session.
In the video, Gosling, Wyatt, and Ronson, surrounded by Christmas lights, engage in banter while crafting the festive remix. Gosling, embracing his Ken persona, even humorously dons sunglasses, declaring that “the world can have Ken’s voice, but only Barbie can have his eyes.” The behind-the-scenes glimpse reveals the trio collaborating with a full band, including two cellists, four violinists, and a glockenspiel, enhancing the triumphant and whimsical reimagining of the song.
With vocals drenched in reverb, Gosling concludes the holiday remix with a cheerful, “Merry Christmas, Barbie, wherever you are.” The EP’s standout track, “I’m Just Ken,” has garnered attention, earning a nomination for Best Song Written for Visual Media at the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards and a shot at the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Ronson, the executive producer of the “Barbie” soundtrack, expressed earlier that “I’m Just Ken” was an exception to his usual film-centric musical contributions, driven by its memorable chorus of “I’m just Ken, anywhere else I’d be a 10.”
