Patrice Lawrence’s “Needle” wins 2023 Little Rebels Award for Radical Fiction

Patrice Lawrence has won the 2023 Little Rebels Award for her book “Needle”. 

The Little Rebels Children’s Book Award is a prize for radical fiction aimed at children aged 0-12. 

The award celebrates radical fiction that promotes social justice and challenges stereotypes, and is given by the Alliance of Radical Booksellers. The shortlist for the 2023 Little Rebels Award also included books by Juno Dawson and Laura Hughes, and Varsha Shah. 

Needle, about a young girl named London, who is a talented artist but struggles with dyslexia, is published by Barrington Stoke, a publisher that specialises in books for children with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. The story explores themes of friendship, creativity, and self-discovery. 

The judges described “Needle” as a “masterpiece” and praised its “brilliantly crafted characters” and “powerful message”.
