Paramount merges with Skydance

In a landmark move that reshapes the landscape of Hollywood, Paramount Global has agreed to merge with Skydance Media, per cnbc.com.

This deal signifies the end of the Redstone family’s control over the storied studio, marking the conclusion of a legacy that began with Sumner Redstone, who expanded a chain of drive-in cinemas into a vast media empire. Shari Redstone, the non-executive chair of Paramount, will sell her family’s controlling stake as part of the complex transaction leading to the merger.

The merger integrates Paramount, home to iconic films such as Chinatown and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, with Skydance Media, known for its financial backing of blockbuster hits like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Star Trek Into Darkness.” Paramount Global, with its origins dating back to the founding of Paramount Pictures Corporation in 1914, has been a stalwart in the film industry, producing classics like “The Godfather,” the “Star Trek” series, and the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. However, the entertainment giant has faced significant financial struggles in the past decade, with its shares plummeting by over 75% in the last five years.

Skydance Media, led by David Ellison, son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, brings fresh financial vigour to the merged entity. The deal also follows internal discord within Paramount, highlighted by the departure of CEO Bob Bakish in April after disagreements with Shari Redstone over the Skydance merger.

As the entertainment industry undergoes a transformation driven by the rise of video streaming, this merger positions the combined entity to better compete in a rapidly evolving market. Paramount’s TV channels, which include CBS, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and MTV, boast a global reach of over 4.3 billion subscribers across more than 180 countries, offering a vast audience base for the new venture.

This historic merger not only signifies the end of the Redstone era but also heralds a new chapter for Paramount and Skydance as they navigate the future of entertainment together.
