In a ceremony celebrating excellence in Nigeria’s performing arts, Dr Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director and CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has been awarded the prestigious Fellow of Theatre Profession (FTA) by the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP).
The award recognises Dr. Husseini’s exceptional contributions to the growth and development of theatre and film arts in Nigeria.
The event, attended by luminaries from Nigeria’s culture, theatre and film industries, celebrated Dr Husseini’s multifaceted career as a theatre practitioner, film journalist, culture advocate and administrator. Among the distinguished guests were Tola Akerele, General Manager of the National Theatre; Jahman Anikulapo, culture activist and chairman of the Committee for Relevant Arts (CORA); Prof. Duro Oni, Chairman of the Body of Fellows of NANTAP; and veteran actors Norbert Young and Joke Silva Jacobs, the latter of whom was also honoured at the ceremony.
In a citation read before Dr Husseini was decorated, NANTAP highlighted his significant strides in promoting Nigerian dance, theatre, and film both locally and internationally. The association also acknowledged his recent appointment as ED/CEO of the NFVCB, noting his instrumental role in shaping the country’s film industry.
Accepting the award, Dr. Husseini expressed gratitude to NANTAP, describing the honour as not just a personal achievement but a testament to the collective efforts of all those who have contributed to the advancement of theatre practice in Nigeria.
“I am grateful, honoured, and proud to be part of a community that has consistently pushed the boundaries of creativity, innovation and excellence,” he said. “Since the reward for hard work is more work, I commit to continue working tirelessly to promote and advance the cause of theatre and film arts in Nigeria.”
The Fellow of Theatre Profession award is NANTAP’s highest accolade, reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, creativity and commitment to the theatre arts. Dr Husseini was inducted alongside other notable figures, including Joke Silva Jacobs, Sam Uche-Anyamele and Bolanle Austen-Peters.
The ceremony underscored the vibrancy of Nigeria’s creative industries and celebrated the visionaries driving its continued growth and global recognition.
