Muyiwa & Riversongz unleashed a revolutionary reimagining of the iconic gospel anthem “Hey Ya,” transforming the 2007 classic into a vibrant Amapiano-powered celebration of faith and rhythm.
The reimagined track, produced by the genre-bending maestro Emmanuel Sampah, a statement says, breathes new life into the original recording, which was initially captured during a electrifying live performance at London’s Ocean music venue. Sampah’s innovative approach seamlessly blends the song’s spiritual roots with contemporary South African electronic dance music, creating a sound that bridges generational and cultural divides.
“I wanted to honour the heart of the original while bringing in fresh elements that reflect where music is today,” Sampah revealed. His production carefully preserves the track’s original spiritual essence while introducing pulsating Amapiano beats that invite listeners to both reflect and dance.
Muyiwa, the visionary behind the original track, sees this remix as more than just a musical update. “This song is a testament to the power of faith and joy,” he explained. “To see it remixed and still resonate so strongly is truly a blessing.”
The remix represents more than a musical experiment—it’s a bold statement about the evolving nature of gospel music. By incorporating Amapiano’s infectious rhythms, Muyiwa & Riversongz are pushing the boundaries of traditional gospel, demonstrating the genre’s ability to adapt and remain relevant in a rapidly changing musical landscape.
Originally inspired by the spiritual practices of American Indians and co-produced with Eddie Martin, “Hey Ya” has always been about transcendence. This new iteration continues that legacy, inviting listeners on a transformative musical journey that celebrates both tradition and innovation.
