Michael Caine eyes return to screen at 92 for “The Last Witch Hunter 2”

Sir Michael Caine is poised to break his self-imposed retirement, entering final talks to reprise the role of Dolan 36th in “The Last Witch Hunter 2,” Lionsgate confirmed Tuesday, per film-news.co.uk.

The 92-year-old Oscar winner, who declared “I am now” retired in October 2023, would reunite with Vin Diesel’s immortal witch-slayer Kaulder in the long-awaited sequel to the 2015 fantasy hit.

Sources tell Variety that while Caine’s deal is not yet signed, studio executives are “confident” the London-born icon will return to the screen. Lionsgate and Diesel’s One Race Films are fast-tracking production, citing a decade of robust streaming numbers.

“The Last Witch Hunter has grown into a global fan favourite,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said. “Advancements in technology now let us deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”

The original film grossed $147 million worldwide and has remained a top-viewed title on Prime Video and Apple TV. Plot details for the follow-up are under wraps, but Diesel promised “a darker, bigger chapter” in the war between witches and mortals.

If confirmed, Caine’s return would cap a 70-year career spanning more than 180 films, from Alfie to The Dark Knight.

Pre-production begins this autumn in Toronto; Lionsgate eyes a 2026 release.
