Louise Erdrich, a citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, per nativenewsonline.net.

The annual award honours artists whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to public understanding and enjoyment of life.
Erdrich was recognised for her overall body of work rather than a single publication.
Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Erdrich has written 18 novels alongside poetry, children’s books and other works. Her writing focuses on Native lives, history, culture, family and the lasting impact of colonisation, helping bring Indigenous perspectives to wider audiences in the United States and internationally.
Among her best-known novels are Love Medicine, The Round House, LaRose and The Night Watchman. The latter won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was inspired by the efforts of her grandfather, Patrick Gourneau, to oppose federal policies aimed at terminating tribal status and dispossessing Native communities.
Erdrich’s previous honours also include the 2012 National Book Award for Fiction for The Round House and two National Book Critics Circle Awards, including recognition for Love Medicine and LaRose.
In addition to her writing, Erdrich is the founder and co-owner of Birchbark Books in Minneapolis. The independent bookstore specialises in Native literature and has become an important cultural hub for writers, readers and artists.
The Gish Prize selection committee cited both Erdrich’s literary contributions and the role of Birchbark Books in promoting the work of Native and non-Native authors.
Established in 1994 through the estates of silent-film pioneers Dorothy and Lillian Gish, the prize honours artists whose work has had a significant cultural impact. Previous recipients include Bob Dylan, Frank Gehry, Merce Cunningham and Ava DuVernay.
