Jay-Z has offered his account of how the friendship between Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. deteriorated into one of hip-hop’s most infamous rivalries, per hiphophero.com, arguing that mistrust and the influence of people around Tupac helped trigger the split that ultimately reshaped rap history.
Speaking in his documentary series JAÿ-Z in 8 during a conversation with producer Rick Rubin, Jay-Z reflected on the breakdown of relations between Tupac Shakur and Christopher “Biggie Smalls” Wallace, who were once friends and collaborators before becoming bitter rivals.
According to Jay-Z, tensions began as Tupac’s fame rapidly increased in the early 1990s. He said Biggie became concerned about some of the people surrounding Tupac and warned his friend to be cautious.
Jay-Z claimed Tupac later relayed those concerns to the individuals in question, creating problems for Biggie. He recalled an occasion when Biggie chose not to enter a New York club because people inside were hostile towards him. Looking back, Jay-Z said the decision made sense given the conflicts Biggie had reportedly developed with what he described as serious figures in the city.
The relationship worsened after Tupac was shot and robbed at New York’s Quad Recording Studios in November 1994. Tupac subsequently accused Biggie and Bad Boy Records founder Sean “Diddy” Combs of involvement in the attack, allegations both men denied.
The accusations marked a turning point in the feud. Efforts at reconciliation collapsed as both artists exchanged diss tracks and public insults, deepening divisions within hip-hop.
Jay-Z acknowledged he did not fully understand Tupac’s mindset at the time but argued that blaming Biggie for failing to prevent the Quad Studios shooting was misguided. He said no individual could control the people or circumstances Tupac believed were connected to the incident.
The rivalry between Tupac and Biggie became a defining chapter in 1990s hip-hop and remains one of the genre’s most discussed conflicts. Both artists were later killed in separate shootings, cementing the feud’s tragic legacy.
