Real-life couple Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz lead the cast of Bunker, a 126-minute psychological thriller directed by Florian Zeller that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival ahead of its February 19, 2027 release, per collider.com.
The film follows Miguel, a successful London-based architect played by Bardem, and his literary agent wife Sofia, played by Cruz, whose seemingly affluent life unravels behind closed doors. The plot thickens when an elusive tech billionaire named Andrew, portrayed by Paul Dano, hires Miguel to design a massive survival bunker for the societal elite.
As Miguel becomes consumed by the high-stakes project, domestic tensions mount. Sofia feels professionally sidelined and increasingly alienated in London, while interpersonal friction grows with their neighbours, including Toby, played by Stephen Graham, whose newly installed window overlooks their property. These escalating anxieties culminate in a tense, slow-burning narrative that blends dark comedy with psychological terror.
While critics have praised the central performances and the film’s striking atmosphere, some noted that supporting characters feel underdeveloped and broader themes of wealth inequality lack depth. Nevertheless, the magnetic chemistry between Bardem and Cruz anchors the production, driving the story toward a chilling conclusion.
Bunker marks director Florian Zeller’s latest exploration of family dysfunction, following his acclaimed previous features The Father and The Son, and features a supporting cast that includes Patrick Schwarzenegger, Mark Gatiss and Chloe Conh.
