The documentary No U-Turn directed by Nollywood filmmaker Ike Nnabue has been awarded this year’s artistic bravery award for being very honest and touching at the just concluded 2022 Durban International Film Festival (DIFF).
According to the jury, “the director took a risk for both himself and the participants.”
Also a screenwriter and producer, he is referred to by most African film industry stakeholders as one of the champions of the emerging new African Cinema.
The film, which emerged Berlinale Documentary Award Special Mention earlier in the year, focuses on Nnaebue, who as a young man tried to flee to Europe. More than 20 years later, he retraces the steps of his journey back then to find out what motivates people today to expose themselves to the dangers of a passage into an uncertain future.
In 1997, with three friends, he embarked on a journey from Lagos, through Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Mauritania, to Morocco, with the aim of reaching Europe.
The film was made as part of the Generation Africa project.
