Idris Elba to headline TV adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s ‘Things Fall Apart’

Idris Elba is set to star in and executive produce a TV series adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s acclaimed novel Things Fall Apart, according to a variety.com report. The project, currently in development at A24, reports the outlet, promises to bring one of the most influential works of African literature to a global audience.

Elba will take on the role of Okonkwo, the novel’s complex protagonist, described as a fearless African warrior and leader determined to preserve his people’s culture in the face of British colonisation. The series will explore Okonkwo’s struggle to maintain power and tradition, culminating in a heart-wrenching confrontation with unstoppable change.

While no writer is currently attached and the project has yet to find a home on a streaming service or network, the production team boasts impressive credentials. Elba’s newly launched 22Summers production banner will co-produce alongside David Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon. Additional executive producers include Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi and representatives from Achebe Masterworks.

Things Fall Apart, first published in 1958, is widely regarded as a masterpiece of world literature. Translated into over 60 languages, it has garnered numerous accolades, including the Man Booker International Prize.

For Elba, fresh off an Emmy nomination for Hijack, this role represents another challenging character in his illustrious career. His involvement both in front of and behind the camera underscores the project’s significance.
