Emma Lowe takes the helm as new director of London Book Fair

The London Book Fair (LBF) has announced Emma Lowe as its new director, marking a significant leadership transition for one of the world’s most prestigious publishing events, per thebookseller.com. Lowe, a seasoned professional with over two decades of experience in the book industry, will officially step into the role in July, succeeding Adam Ridgway, who is retiring after 34 years in the conference sector.

Lowe’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for LBF, as the fair continues to rebuild and innovate following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing redevelopment of its Olympia venue. Gareth Rapley, interim portfolio director for LBF at RX, will oversee operations until Lowe assumes her position.

With a career spanning roles at HarperCollins, The Bookseller and GlassBoxx, Lowe brings a wealth of expertise to the table. She began her career at RX, working on LBF as head of sales, before moving to The Bookseller, where she spearheaded flagship events such as The British Book Awards and FutureBook. Her most recent role as head of events at HarperCollins saw her managing high-profile gatherings, including the publisher’s author party at the V&A and its pre-LBF celebrations.

“Emma’s unique combination of experience with RX, LBF, and the broader publishing industry makes her the ideal leader for this role,” said Rapley. “Her deep understanding of the sector and her ability to navigate its evolving landscape will ensure LBF remains a cornerstone of the global publishing community.”

David Roche, non-executive chair of the LBF advisory board, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Lowe’s “empathetic personality and winning persona” as key assets. “Emma’s appointment brings stability and a fresh perspective at a time when the industry is re-embracing in-person events and looking to the future,” he added.

For Lowe, the role represents a homecoming. “LBF was my runway into the world of books, and I’m thrilled to return at such an exciting time,” she said. “Our industry thrives on face-to-face interaction, and I’m committed to ensuring LBF continues to be a vital hub for the global publishing ecosystem.”
