In July 2023, the vibrant city of Eko is set to host the much-anticipated Eko Theatre Carnival (ETC) for its 8th consecutive year. This annual extravaganza gathers artistes from diverse backgrounds, coming together to offer a mesmerising display of committed arts.
From its inception in 2016, the Eko Theatre Carnival has captivated audiences with its soul-stirring performances, and this year promises to be even more exhilarating. Embodying the spirit of “art for the people, by the people, and of the people,” ETC showcases raw and honest expressions of creativity from artistes at various stages of their careers.
One of the highlights of ETC 2023 is its enriching seminars, bridging the gap between academic scholarship and artistic practice. The festival’s commitment to sustainability in the arts is evident through these insightful sessions.
On Day 1, which is Monday 31 July, theatre enthusiasts will have the opportunity to attend the seminar titled “The Eloquence of the Unspoken: Communitas and Children’s Voice in Eko Theatre Carnival,” led by the esteemed Dr. Rasheedah Aliyu Liman, Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Performing Arts at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
Day 2 will feature another captivating seminar titled “Contemporary Nigerian Theatre as Public-Facing Praxis,” led by Dr. Chucks Okoye, Associate Professor of African Theatre and Performance at the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Ibadan (UI).
Aside from the intellectually stimulating seminars, ETC 2023 boasts an eclectic lineup of events, including a fashion show, music concert, traditional masquerade performance, film screening, poetry party and more. With a rich blend of cultural expressions, the carnival promises to deliver an unforgettable experience that will leave attendees enthralled.
Festival Curator Segun Adefila invites everyone to brace themselves for an enchanting and culturally immersive event that will touch the heart and soul of all participants. The festival is a testament to the power of unity in diversity and the boundless magic that unfolds when art finds its home within the hearts of the people.
