Chair of judges Abigail Shinn praised the shortlist for its “wildly different” approaches, united by a “restless curiosity about form.” The nominees include Mark Bowles’ “All My Precious Madness,” a raw exploration of class and anger; Lara Pawson’s “Spent Light,” a hybrid work blending memoir and fiction; and Han Smith’s “Portraits at the Palace of Creativity and Wrecking,” a hallucinatory coming-of-age tale.
Established authors also feature prominently. Rachel Cusk makes her fourth appearance on the shortlist with “Parade,” while Jonathan Buckley’s “Tell” and Neel Mukherjee’s “Choice” round out the selection. Notably, independent publishers dominate this year’s list, responsible for five of the six shortlisted works.
