Femi Odugbemi, renowned Nigerian filmmaker and media executive, has officially unveiled BLACKBox, a new creative hub poised to become a cornerstone of Nigeria’s booming creative industry. Located in the vibrant heart of Lekki, Lagos, BLACKBox is designed as a pioneering centre for content design, production consultancy, and film and television training. This initiative aims to cultivate a new generation of storytellers and content creators, empowering them to craft compelling narratives with global appeal.
BLACKBox, according to Odugbemi, is more than just a physical space; it’s an ecosystem built to support creators from the ground up. The hub features state-of-the-art facilities, including flexible workshop spaces that can host up to 50 participants, group breakout rooms, and dedicated areas for collaborative discussions. According to Odugbemi,
The goal, added the filmmaker, is to create an environment where creativity can flourish.
“Our mission is to support creators not just in the art of storytelling but also in the strategic development, structure, and delivery of content that is both innovative and commercially viable,” he stated at the launch.
A key component of the BLACKBox model is its focus on continuous professional development. The hub will offer a series of intensive training programs, masterclasses, and mentorship opportunities. These programmes are meticulously designed to build capacity in critical areas such as script development, production design, directing, and audience engagement, providing emerging and established creators with the tools they need to succeed.
Further cementing its role as a key industry player, Odugbemi’s acclaimed production company, Zuri24 Media, will now operate from the BLACKBox facility. Zuri24 Media, the force behind hit television series like Battleground, Brethren, and Covenant, as well as award-winning films such as Gidi Blues, will provide a real-time, hands-on learning environment for participants. This strategic co-location ensures that training and mentorship are directly integrated with practical, industry-level production experience.
By combining consultancy services, content development, and continuous training, BLACKBox is set to become a vital engine for Nigeria’s creative economy. It offers a unique blend of artistic mentorship and strategic business support, bridging the gap between creative vision and market viability. This new hub promises to be a catalyst for innovation, shaping African stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.
