Ashidapo reimagines Wande Coal’s classic for new-gen Afrobeats hit “Gobe”

Ashidapo is set to cement his status as a breakout star with the official release of his viral single, “Gobe”. The track, which officially dropped on October 4, 2025, is a masterful reimagining of Wande Coal’s 2009 classic, “Baby Hello”.

Born Fowowe Oyedapo David, the Afrofusion and street pop artiste has been steadily building momentum following the success of his debut EP, Take Ova, which has garnered over 5 million streams globally. His high-octane collaboration, “Girl On Fya” featuring Olamide, also peaked at No. 22 on Apple Music NG and remained on the top 20 global Shazam chart for four weeks.

Even before its official launch, “Gobe” had become a viral phenomenon, igniting a firestorm on TikTok. An advance snippet of the track fuelled over 14,000 user-generated videos, driven by dance challenges and flirtatious lip-syncs. The single’s club-ready energy rapidly made it one of the most anticipated Afropop releases of the year.

While the Nigerian slang term “Gobe” traditionally means “trouble”, Ashidapo flips the script for his single. He uses the word to describe that “heart-stopping moment when someone walks into a room and everything else fades away,” defining it as being “completely mesmerised by a lady”. As Ashidapo puts it, “‘Gobe’ has the energy that makes you stop and say ‘wow’”. The track is a vibrant celebration of swagger, infatuation, and a connection between generations.

Produced by UK-based Nigerian hitmaker Maleek Berry (known for his work with Wizkid, Davido and Tiwa Savage), “Gobe” showcases a blend of old-school soul and next-gen Afrobeats. The production skillfully samples the nostalgic melody of “Baby Hello,” updating it with a hypnotic hook, bouncy log drums, and crisp percussion designed for clubs, streets, and playlists.

Released via Ashidapo’s own imprint, Ova Music, “Gobe” positions the artist as a dominant force in the Afrobeats scene for 2025.

Listen/stream “Gobe” now on all platforms.
