Aaron Taylor-Johnson to star in André Aciman’s “Enigma Variations”

Fans of the sun-drenched, visceral romance of Call Me by Your Name have a new obsession on the horizon. Netflix has greenlit a seductive adaptation of André Aciman’s acclaimed novel, Enigma Variations, with British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson set to take the lead.

Taylor-Johnson, known for his versatile turns in Nocturnal Animals and Nosferatu, will portray Paul, a man defined by the intense physical and emotional connections that shape his life over a transformative decade. The story serves as a sweeping yet intimate exploration of modern masculinity and the volatile nature of desire, following Paul across various international locales including Italy, New York, and New England

.

The project is being developed as a limited series by Media Res, the powerhouse studio behind The Morning Show and Pachinko. A.K. Shuman is attached to write and executive produce, while Oliver Hermanus, fresh off the success of the Bafta-nominated Living, will direct.

Aciman’s source material has long been praised by critics for its evocative prose. The New York Times previously described the book as a “magnificent, living thing,” noting the author’s unique ability to capture the “loop-the-loop giddiness” of infatuation. With a pedigree of high-calibre creators behind the camera and Taylor-Johnson at the helm, the series looks to be one of the most anticipated prestige dramas in recent years.
