A$AP Rocky joins Spike Lee’s bold Akira Kurosawa reimagining film

Spike Lee has tapped rapper A$AP Rocky to headline his upcoming film “Highest 2 Lowest,” a provocative reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, per faroutmagazine.co.uk

Lee’s latest project promises to be a transformative exploration of the original narrative, with significant departures from the source material. Instead of a shoe company executive, Rocky will portray a music industry mogul, reflecting Lee’s vision of a contemporary reimagining.

The film marks a significant milestone for both Lee and Rocky. For the director, it represents his first feature film in five years since Da 5 Bloods, while for the rapper, it’s another step into dramatic acting following previous roles in Dope and Monster.

A24, known for its innovative film selections, will distribute the project. The cast boasts an impressive ensemble, including Denzel Washington—reuniting with Lee for their fifth collaborative effort—and emerging talent Ice Spice, making her feature film debut.

“This is not a remake,” Lee emphasized to Deadline, “this is a reinterpretation of Kurosawa’s great film.” The director’s commitment to reimagining classic narratives through a modern lens continues to challenge and excite cinema enthusiasts.

Alongside Rocky, the film will feature Jeffrey Wright, Dean Winters, Michael Potts, Ilfenesh Hadera, and John Douglas Thompson, promising a rich and dynamic narrative.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the anticipation for Lee’s latest artistic venture continues to build. “Highest 2 Lowest” is set to release next year, marking another potentially groundbreaking moment in contemporary cinema.
