The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA) at Pan-Atlantic University has been recognised as Nigeria’s top art gallery and museum at the 2025/2026 Travellers Awards, announced during the Akwaaba African Travel Market in Lagos.
The award was presented on September 13, 2026, at Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos, following a public voting process organised by ATQ News and Travellers Magazine. The Travellers Awards honour organisations contributing to aviation, travel, tourism and hospitality across Africa.
Director of YSMA, Dr Jess Castellote, said the recognition reflects the museum’s growing relevance as a space where art, education and public engagement intersect. He noted that the institution aims to make Nigerian art and cultural heritage accessible and meaningful to diverse audiences.
Pan-Atlantic University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Enase Okonedo, described the award as an affirmation of the university’s commitment to extending education beyond the classroom through culture, creativity and heritage.
Founded in 2020, YSMA houses more than 1,000 artworks by leading Nigerian modern and contemporary artists. The museum has developed exhibitions, workshops and public programmes to engage schools, communities and international partners, positioning itself as a hub for cultural tourism in Lagos.
Ikechi Uke, founder of the Akwaaba African Travel Market and publisher of Travellers Magazine, said the award highlights the importance of cultural institutions in Nigeria’s tourism sector, noting that museums and galleries preserve the stories and heritage that define destinations.
The Travellers Awards, established in 1996, have recognised individuals and organisations shaping Africa’s travel and tourism industry.
