His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, will once again demonstrate his unwavering support for the arts as he presides as the Guest of Honour at the opening of “Anyanwu – The New Light.”
This highly anticipated exhibition is set to enchant art enthusiasts from September 5 to 28 at the National Museum, Onikan, Lagos.
The exhibition, whose title “Anyanwu” translates from Igbo as “the sun” – symbolising light, renewal, and a burgeoning era for Nigerian art – will showcase a diverse and captivating collection from six distinguished contemporary artists, namely:
•Emmah Mbanefo
•Chinwe Uwatse
•Obi Okigbo
•JC Bright
•Mobolaji Otuyelu
•Chiagoziem Orji
These artists, each with their unique stylistic approaches, are set to showcase a rich and modern Nigerian artistic expression, reflecting the exhibition’s central theme of a new dawn. Their works are expected to span various mediums, offering compelling narratives and visual dialogues that engage with both traditional influences and contemporary perspectives.
The exhibition is curated by Tony Agbapuonwu, a celebrated figure in the Nigerian art scene. Agbapuonwu’s discerning eye and profound understanding of the current artistic landscape have shaped a cohesive and thought-provoking display that highlights the individual strengths of each artist while creating a harmonious overall experience.
A special Collector’s Preview will take place on September 5th, 2025, from 5pm to 8pm, offering an exclusive opportunity for art patrons and enthusiasts to experience the collection before its public opening. The main exhibition will then run daily from 10am to 5pm until September 28.
This event is not only a celebration of individual artistic brilliance but also hearkens to the enduring patronage of cultural leaders like Igwe Achebe. His consistent involvement underscores a deep commitment to nurturing and elevating Nigeria’s artistic heritage, ensuring that the work of both established and emerging artists receives the recognition it deserves. Organised by Art Bridge Projects, in collaboration with Onitsha Royal Cabinet, National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) and Adegbọla Art Projects, “Anyanwu – The New Light” is poised to be a landmark event on Nigeria’s cultural calendar.
