From March 18 to April 1, Omenka Gallery will host “Ijinle Ara | The Depth of Self,” a thought-provoking solo exhibition by UK-based Nigerian artist Abraham Babajide Cole. The exhibition, featuring a series of charcoal and ink drawings, delves into the intricate themes of identity, spirituality, and the quest for selfhood beyond the superficial.
According to the gallery, Cole’s work is deeply inspired by Yoruba philosophy, which emphasises the existence of life beyond the visible realm. His art challenges viewers to look beyond the physical reflection in the mirror and explore the intangible essence of who we truly are. In a world that is constantly evolving, Cole’s pieces pose a poignant question: Who are we beneath the ever-shifting masks of time, place and experience?
Ijinle Ara is a visual exploration of the unseen forces that shape our identities. Through abstraction, masks and fragmented forms, Cole’s figures emerge from a delicate interplay of shadow and light, symbolising the multifaceted nature of selfhood in a world of perpetual change. The exhibition serves as a call to introspection, urging viewers to embrace their spiritual depth and recognize that we are the sum of all that we carry—our histories, memories, and ancestral echoes.
Abraham Babajide Cole, a graduate of Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, has built a career that spans painting, drawing, illustration and digital design. His work is deeply rooted in themes of migration, identity and spirituality, often drawing inspiration from nature, antiques and the interplay of visual forms.
In October 2022, Cole made his solo debut with “Deep Introspection” at ArtRooms Gallery in Birmingham, UK. His international acclaim continued in 2024 when he contributed to the Mayor of London’s Untold Stories Project, collaborating with The Culture Tree and Southwark City Council to create a monumental public art installation in Peckham, celebrating Yoruba heritage and identity.
Cole’s work has also been showcased globally, including at the Suns of Egypt exhibition in Athens, Greece, in April 2024, where he presented a series of 12 drawings inspired by Biblical and Quranic narratives. These works expanded his ongoing exploration of migration and portraiture, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and deeply introspective artist.
