Hilary Hahn has clinched the prestigious “Recording of the Year” award at the 2024 Gramophone Classical Music Awards in London, per violinist.com. The honour, bestowed upon Hahn for her masterful interpretation of Ysaÿe’s solo violin sonatas, marks a historic first for a solo melody instrument album.
Hahn’s triumph was twofold, as she also secured the “Instrumental” award for the same Deutsche Grammophon release. The violinist’s acceptance speech touched on the power of recordings to connect musicians with audiences, especially poignant given her recent recovery from a nerve injury.
Deutsche Grammophon President Clemens Trautmann highlighted the unique significance of Hahn’s achievement, noting the album’s personal connection to her musical lineage through Ysaÿe, who taught Hahn’s own instructor.
The awards ceremony also saw fellow violinist Isabelle Faust recognised in the “Concerto” and “Chamber” categories, underscoring the instrument’s prominence in this year’s honours.
Other notable recipients included Yunchan Lim for his Chopin Études, earning him both the “Piano” award and the title of Young Artist of the Year. The Czech Philharmonic was named Orchestra of the Year, while legendary conductor Michael Tilson Thomas received the Lifetime Achievement award.
This year’s Gramophone Awards have not only celebrated exceptional musical talent but also highlighted the enduring relevance and innovation within classical music.
