Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’ to headline Christie’s historic auction in Hong Kong

Claude Monet’s iconic “Water Lilies” painting will be the centrepiece of Christie’s inaugural evening sale of 20th- and 21st-century art at its new Asia headquarters in Hong Kong, per luxurylaunches.com.

The masterpiece, titled “Nymphéas”, is one of the few remaining works from Monet’s first Water Lilies series still in private hands. This 127-year-old artwork, which stayed within the Monet family for decades, captures the serene beauty of the water-lily pond at Monet’s Giverny home—a theme that inspired over 250 of his paintings.

Measuring 73.3 x 101 cm, “Nymphéas” is expected to become one of the most valuable Western artworks ever auctioned in Asia. Christie’s new headquarters, designed by Zaha Hadid, will host the landmark sale on September 26.

Cristian Albu, deputy chairman and head of 20th/21st century art at Christie’s Asia Pacific, remarked, “This painting is a true singular treasure… We are privileged to present this seminal piece to our discerning collectors in Asia.”

The auction is anticipated to draw significant attention, underscoring the growing demand for iconic Western art in the Asian market.
