Queen sells catalogue to Sony Music for over $1b

Queen has struck a monumental deal with Sony Music, selling its back catalogue and other rights for an astounding £1 billion, approximately $1.27 billion, per audiophix.com. This landmark agreement significantly boosts the fortunes of the band’s founding members.

Guitarist Brian May, already with a net worth of $260 million, will see his wealth surge, as will drummer Roger Taylor and retired bassist John Deacon. Each member is expected to receive around £200 million from the sale, although specific financial details remain undisclosed.

Tragically, lead vocalist Freddie Mercury, who passed away in 1991 with a net worth of about $50 million, could not witness this windfall. Mercury’s legacy, however, continues to resonate profoundly through the band’s enduring popularity.

The deal excludes rights to live performances, allowing Queen to continue touring with Adam Lambert. The band retains all earnings from future tours, ensuring their live presence remains strong.

Sony Music now holds the rights to Queen’s name and likeness, paving the way for extensive commercial ventures. From musicals to merchandise, the world should brace for a surge in Queen-related products.

With timeless hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Somebody to Love,” and “We Will Rock You,” Queen’s music is poised to become even more omnipresent. Fans can expect to hear their favourite tracks in a multitude of new formats as Sony capitalises on this historic acquisition.
