The Tate Modern is set to host an exhibition titled “A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography” from July 6, 2023 to January 14, 2024.
The exhibition will feature the works of 36 artists from across Africa, exploring the continent’s diverse photographic output including Lebohang Kganye, Atong Atem, Sabelo Mlangeni, Ruth Ossai, Prince Gyasi, Lyle Ashton Harris, Mohau Modisakeng, Zanele Muholi, Lunga Ntila, Hank Willis Thomas and Caecilia Tripp.
To delve into themes such as cultural heritage, urbanisation, spirituality and climate change, it will present shared artistic visions that aim to reclaim Africa’s histories while imagining more hopeful futures.
The exhibition follows artists across the many landscapes, borders, and time zones of Africa to reveal how photography allows the past and the future to co-exist. The aim is to show how photography, film, audio, and more are being used to reimagine Africa’s cultures and historical narratives. While highlighting contemporary perspectives on cultural heritage, spirituality, urbanisation and more, the exhibition will be presenting shared artistic visions that aim to reclaim Africa’s histories while imagining more hopeful futures.
The exhibition will be open to the public from July 6, 2023, to January 14, 2024, at the Tate Modern, with tickets priced at £17.
