After 39 years Swedish sensations ABBA are reportedly on the comeback trail. “Mamma Mia! Here we go again”, is how Mirror captured it in the opening sentence of its report.
The paper quoted a source as saying that the band is releasing new music next Friday in what will be the first new tracks by Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad in almost four decades.
The group is said to have originally started planning their long-awaited comeback in 2019 but the Covid-19 pandemic scuppered the idea.
In 2018 the Swedish stars announced that they would be recording new tracks in the future – with the confirmation last year that they would produce more songs than they had first planned.
The group, whose hits include “Waterloo”, “Dancing Queen” and “Fernando”, originally split up in 1982, with couples Bjorn and Agnetha and Benny and Frida breaking off their relationships.
The four performed together for the first time in over 30 years at a private event in 2016. The performance marked the 50th anniversary of the first time Bjorn and Benny met each other.
They are also preparing to launch a show called Abba Voyage which features their younger selves beamed on stage as “Abba-tars” and performing a range of classic hits.
The Abba Voyage is set to follow the iconic group’s comeback with the purpose-built theatre in East London for their hologram show said to be ready to open next month.
