The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the shortlists for the 2025 Oscars, highlighting strong contenders in the music categories, per variety.com. Leading the charge is the French musical Emilia Pérez, which has secured multiple entries across various categories.
Emilia Pérez, a French musical set in Mexico City about a transgender cartel head, is particularly strong with six entries in the shortlists.
In the Best Original Score category, notable composers have made the shortlist. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are recognised for their work on “Challengers,” Daniel Blumberg for “The Brutalist,” Bryce Dessner for “Sing Sing,” Danny Elfman for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and Hans Zimmer for “Blitz.”
The Best Original Song category features a diverse array of artistes. Maren Morris’s “Kiss the Sky” from The Wild Robot and Pharrell Williams’s “Piece by Piece” have both advanced. Additionally, Reznor and Ross’s “Compress / Repress” from Challengers is in contention.
However, some notable artists were absent from the shortlists. Miley Cyrus’s Golden Globe-nominated song “Beautiful That Way” from “The Last Showgirl” did not make the cut, nor did Lady Gaga’s “Folie à Deux” from the Joker sequel.
The final nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards will be announced on January 17, with the ceremony scheduled for March 2, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
