Chair of judges, Eleanor Wachtel, remarked on the profound impact of novels in transporting readers to unfamiliar landscapes and stirring new emotions. She highlighted the shortlist’s ability to intertwine the personal and the political, offering fresh insights into the complexities of human existence.
Among the contenders is Not a River by Selva Almada, a haunting exploration of masculinity, guilt and desire set against the backdrop of a fishing trip gone awry. Jenny Erpenbeck’s Kairos delves into the intricacies of love and political upheaval, while Itamar Viera Junior’s Crooked Plow masterfully combines magical realism with social commentary in its portrayal of life in Brazil’s impoverished regions.
Hwang Sok-yong’s Mater 2-10 spans generations of ordinary Koreans, offering a sweeping saga of resilience and perseverance. What I’d Rather Not Think About by Jente Posthuma navigates the depths of grief and loss with poignant authenticity, while la Genberg’s The Details immerses readers in a feverish exploration of relationships and memory.
The winner of the prestigious £50,000 prize will be announced on May 21 at London’s Tate Modern, with the prize money shared equally between the author and translator(s). Shortlisted contenders will also receive recognition, with a shared prize of £5,000.
This year’s ceremony will be livestreamed on the Booker Prizes’ channels and hosted by YouTuber Jack Edwards, known for his passion for literature as the ‘internet’s resident librarian.’
Last year’s winners, author Georgi Gospodinov and translator Angela Rodel, took home the coveted prize for their novel Time Shelter.
