Zoe Saldana’s awards season dominance shows no signs of slowing down. According to a variety.com report, the acclaimed actress took home the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress on Sunday night for her role as Rita in the musical drama Emilia Pérez. This marks her fourth major win this season, following victories at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and BAFTAs, solidifying her status as the frontrunner for the upcoming Academy Awards.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Saldana expressed gratitude for her union, SAG-AFTRA, and the inclusive environment it fosters. “I’m proud to be part of a union that allows me to be who I am,” she said. “I’ve never been questioned about where I come from or judged for how I speak or what my pronouns are. Everyone has the right to be who they are.”
Saldana, who received her first SAG card in 1998, credited her family for helping her understand the importance of union protection in Hollywood. “This is my community, this is my circus,” she added, drawing cheers from the audience.
Her win makes her the second Latina to claim the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress, following Ariana DeBose’s victory for West Side Story. Saldana triumphed over a competitive field that included Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl), Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson) and Ariana Grande (Wicked).
As the Oscars approach on March 2, all eyes are on Saldana to see if she can complete her awards season sweep.
